In both World War I and World War II, factories in Middlesbrough and the county were forced to reorient towards defense orders. And there were reasons for that. The main reason was that the structure of the economy began to change. The demand for large volumes of steel, heavy machinery, and ships was declining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oil crisis of 1973-1974 exacerbated the economic problems of the region. Energy carriers skyrocketed in price, increasing production costs. Many enterprises, especially those that were systemically important, were forced to massively reduce the number of jobs or close down. From 1976 to 1984, about 2\/3 of jobs in the steel industry (around 35,000) were lost, and shipbuilding, which had approximately 18,000 jobs, shrank to nearly zero by 1987.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this transformed Middlesbrough from Ironopolis into a city with a devastated economy, a lack of social programs, and accumulated infrastructure problems. A total of 9,370 violent crimes were recorded, or 63.1 crimes per 1,000 residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In second place are crimes related to anti-social behavior. In 12 months, 4,960 such crimes were recorded, which is 33.4 crimes per 1,000 residents. Social deprivation is the main reason for the increase in crime in the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Middlesbrough faced severe consequences of deindustrialization in the late 20th century and was unable to quickly restructure its economy. As a result, tens of thousands of people lost their jobs, and factories that provided employment for the population closed down. This led to the problem of intergenerational unemployment, where most family members are forced to make do with casual unstable work or remain completely unemployed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another consequence of the economic decline was violence, primarily domestic violence. 39% young offenders had experienced domestic violence in their families. This means that the primary source of violence was indeed the family.
